Remembering Michael Van Rooy; Feb 12 & March 3

Almost two weeks ago we received the call that our wonderful friend and THIN AIR publicist Michael Van Rooy had died suddenly and unexpectedly. He was in Montreal touring with his third crime novel–he was only 42. His death knocked the wind out of us, and we’ll be a long time getting used to life without him.

Michael was both a big man and a big presence in the literary community, and his death leaves a gap in the lives of many people. THIN AIR is teaming up with Michael’s publisher, Turnstone Press, and McNally Robinson Booksellers, his one-time workplace, to celebrate his literary achievements. With three successful crime novels, the first of which has now been released into the US market, and a film in development, Michael was establishing a very big career as a writer. His books will continue to challenge and delight people. “Michael Van Rooy: The Writer,” an evening of readings and stories, will take place Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 pm in Prairie Ink Restaurant at McNally Robinson. We’ll send out a formal invitation in a couple of weeks.

Michael was also very invested in developing a vibrant literary community, and he shared his energies generously with many as a mentor, a board member, a team mate, a friend. Aqua Books, where he did a stint as Writer-in-Residence, is hosting a gathering this Saturday, February 12, at 7:00 pm where all of Michael’s disparate communities can come together to share memories and anecdotes along with poems or other performances, and toast his ongoing presence in our lives. There’ll be an open mic, as well as an opportunity to offer financial support to Michael’s family. For more details, visit aquabooks.ca.

Thanks to all of you who have extended your care and concern toward all of us on the THIN AIR team. It’s a big loss–and an inspiration to step up to the challenge of living with the expansiveness and joy that was Michael’s way.
