Polytechnique shows Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Cinematheque

     As a special event prior to the opening of Colleen Murphy’s new play The December Man (opening At PRAIRIE THEATRE EXCHANGE on January 26), the WFG Cinematheque presents the controversial, award winning, Quebec feature POLYTECHNIQUE.  POLYTECHNIQUE is based on the true events that occurred on December 6, 1989 at Montreal’s Polytechnique School where 14 women were shot by a lone gun man.  

      POLYTECHNIQUE will screen on Thursday,  January 20 at 7:00 PM  @  THE WFG CINEMATHEQUE, 100 ARTHUR STREET followed by a panel discussion of distinguished guests  including moderator Charlene Diehl, a writer, performer, frequent host and moderator and head of THIN AIR, Winnipeg’s September Literary festival;  Polytechnique screenwriter Jacques Davidt (in communication through skype); Ann Hodges – Winnipeg theatre and opera director and the director of the new play THE DECEMBER MAN; Wilma Derksen, Director of VICTIM’S VOICE, a program of the Mennonite Central Committee and author of Have You Seen Candace ? and Confronting the Horror: The Aftermath of Violence which is the result of her personal experience from people who have been impacted by murder and violent crime and Angela Failler, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Winnipeg.

     POLYTECHNIQUE garnered nine GENIE awards, (Canada’s equivalent of the Oscars) including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction (Denis Villeneuve), Original Screenplay (Jacques Davidts), and Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Karine Vanasse). POLYTECHNIQUE also plays on Sunday January 23rd at 7:30 PM at THE CINEMATHEQUE.
