The Winnipeg International Writers Festival and the West End Cultural Centre present DAVE BIDINI at a book reading and performance on Thursday, October 13

The multi-disciplinary entertainment event will take place at 8 p.m. at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg at 586 Ellice Avenue. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the door. They are available at the West End Cultural Centre, Ticketmaster, Music Trader or the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store. 

Bidini will read from his most recent book Home and Away: In Search of Dreams at the Homeless World Cup of Soccer. This uplifting tale is the story of Bidini travelling with Team Canada as they compete for the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne, Australia. Bidini will be accompanied by the band Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers. The show will begin at 8 pm and the doors will open at 7:15. 

Prior to the reading Bidini will host a soccer game on Central Park’s new pitch with neighbourhood kids. Bidini’s team will consist of individuals from the city’s music industry, including Steven Carroll (The Weakerthans), Bob Somers (former Bonaduces member and current landscape architect extraordinaire), John Kendle (Uptown magazine) and Dominic Lloyd (currently the Project Manager of the Cultural Capital of Canada 2010), among others. Neighbourhood kids can register to play by contacting the Spence Neighbourhood Association.

BIO

Dave Bidini is an author, playwright, filmmaker, and musician. He has written nine books including The Best Game You Can Name, Baseballissimo, and Tropic of Hockey (the latter was named one of the Top 100 Canadian Books of All-Time by McClelland and Stewart). His play, “The Five Hole Stories”, was performed by One Yellow Rabbit and toured Canada in winter, 2009, and his two hockumentaries, “The Hockey Nomad” and “The Hockey Nomad Goes to Russia” were Gemini nominated-films (the former won for Best Documentary). He is the recipient of numerous National Magazine Awards as well as being a weekly columnist in The National Post and a contributor to Maisonneuve magazine. In 1994, his former band, Rheostatics, won a Genie Award for their song “Claire” (from the film “Whale Music”) and two of their albums were included in the Top 20 Canadian Albums of All-Time. He is a board member of Street Soccer Canada, and has attended two Homeless World Cups. In 2009, he released a debut album The Land is Wild on Pheromone Records with his new group BidiniBand.
