Murray Sinclair

Senator Murray Sinclair was born and raised in the Selkirk area. He studied law at the University of Manitoba and in 1988 became Manitoba’s first Aboriginal judge. He was Co-Commissioner of Manitoba’s Public Inquiry into the Administration of Justice and Aboriginal People, and in 2009 began traveling the country as Chair of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In March of this year, he was appointed to the Canadian Senate. Senator Sinclair’s observations about the relations between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples are included in the anthology In This Together (Brindle & Glass). His Ojibway name is Mizanay Gheezhik, “The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky.”
