Melissa Barbeau’s work has been antholo-gized in Racket: New Writing Made in Newfoundland, The Cuffer Anthology, and Paragon, and she was awarded the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Awards for fiction and non- fiction. Her debut novel, The Luminous Sea (Breakwater), tells the story of a young research assistant working in a Newfoundland outport who accidentally captures a creature unknown to science: a kind of fish, both sentient and distinctly female. As the project supervisor and lead researcher attempt to exploit the discovery, the creature begins to waste away, and Vivienne must endanger herself to save them both.

Barbeau lives in Torbay, Newfoundland.
