An Ojibway from Obishishoikokaang First Nation (Lac Seul), Martha Troian is an award-winning investigative journalist, producer, and author. She is the author of the recent children’s picture book “”It’s Powwow Time,“” published by Greenwillow/HarperCollins. Her second children’s book for Greenwillow will soon be illustrated.
Martha’s investigations have received widespread acclaim for her work and have contributed to media outlets across North America for nearly two decades. Her work explores Indigenous politics and history, from missing and murdered Indigenous people to human rights, crime, environmental, and women’s issues while using a variety of investigative journalism techniques such as archival research, access-to-information systems, and data journalism.
She writes in multiple genres and media, including investigative journalism, podcasting, features, magazine articles, non-fiction, and picture books. Martha is currently working on a TV script and a play. Martha has a Master of Journalism from Carleton University (Ottawa) in broadcast journalism and a Master of Journalism in investigative journalism from the University of King’s College (Halifax).
Outside of writing, Martha is an artist and jeweller who harvests wiigwaas (birch bark) to create minimalist and contemporary jewelry. She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with her family.
