Mark Morton

Mark Morton is the author of The Headmasters, a thrilling and thought-provoking YA dystopian novel set in the Canadian Shield. The Winnipeg Free Press has called The Headmasters “a worthy companion to books such as Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and John Wyndham’s The Chrysalids in contemplating humanity and freedom.” Renowned sci-fi author Robert Sawyer has said, “The Headmasters is a brilliant science-fiction debut from one of Canada’s best-loved nonfiction writers.” Mark is also the author of four books of nonfiction on language, culture, and history. He has broadcast more than a hundred columns on language and culture for CBC radio, and has written nearly 50 essays for Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture, published by the University of California Press. From 1993 to 2005, Mark lived in Winnipeg (a city he misses dearly) and taught English and Creative Writing at the University of Winnipeg. He is past President of the Manitoba Writers Guild, and a cofounder — along with Andris Taskans and Robyn Maharaj — of the Winnipeg International Writers Festival (now Plume Winnipeg). Mark now lives in Kitchener-Waterloo with his wife Melanie Cameron, also a writer. They have four adult children in various stages of geographic dispersal, four dogs, and one rabbit.
