Andrea Currie

Andrea Currie, Green Turtle Woman, is a mother, writer and musician who believes that stories are medicine, and that healing – for ourselves, our relationships with each other and all creatures, and with the lands and waters that sustain us – has never been more important than it is now. She weaves words into pathways to self-discovery, critiquing the colonial systems that oppress us, and finding wisdom and guidance in the teachings of our Elders and ancestors.
In Finding Otipemisiwak The People Who Own Themselves, Currie retraces her journey as a child born into a proud Métis lineage of leaders, warriors, and artists, through a white middle-class childhood that never felt right, to leaving that place and finding her way home to her family, her culture, and herself. Her younger adoptive brother, also a Métis Sixties Scoop survivor, was not as fortunate. Currie honours his struggle, intertwining his story with hers.
Just as they flow through her homeland, the Red and the Assiniboine Rivers flow through the pages of Finding Otipemisiwak, carrying the stories of past and present generations of Currie’s Métis family. A connection to the rivers was one thing she never lost.”
