Born in 1949 in Southern Manitoba, John Weier grew up in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario but moved to Winnipeg at the age of twenty. Weier has published more than a dozen books, including six major collections of poetry. His first book of poetry, After the Revolution, was published by Turnstone Press in 1986, and his most recent, New & Selected Poems, by CMU Press in 2025. He is the author of essay collections, Marshwalker: Naturalist Memoirs (Turnstone Press 1998) and Stand the Sacred Tree (Turnstone Press 2003), and experimental fiction, Steppe: A Novel (Thistledown Press 1995). Former writer-in residence at the Winnipeg Millennium Library and the University of Winnipeg, Weier is a past president of the League of Canadian Poets and was a major player in the formative years of the Literary Press Group, Access Copyright, and Canadian Book Information Centre. After four decades work as a professional luthier, he now has a career as therapist and mindfulness teacher. Known for his birding mastery and his tireless work in bird conservation, he has logged over 3,400 species of birds around the world.
