André Alexis

André Alexis was born in Trinidad and came to Ottawa when he was four years old. The dislocation of those early years shaped his hugely successful debut novel, Childhood, which won the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award and the Trillium Award, and was shortlisted for The Giller Prize and the Rogers Communications Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. That history also underpins his young adult novel, Ingrid and the Wolf, which was shortlisted for the 2006 Governor General’s Award. His new adult novel, Asylum (McClelland & Stewart) explores intersecting lives in Mulroney-era Ottawa. André Alexis is the host and creator of CBC Radio’s “Skylarking,” and he lives in Toronto.
