Joshua Whitehead is an Oji-Cree, Two-Spirit storyteller from Peguis First Nation on Treaty 1 Territory in Manitoba. His writing came to national attention in 2016 when his poem “mihkokwaniy” won a Governor General’s History Award for Indigenous Arts and Stories. His acclaimed debut poetry collection full-metal indigiqueer (Talonbooks) takes on both literary and popular culture to reclaim space for queer Indigenous youth. His recent novel, Jonny Appleseed (Arsenal Pulp), offers a self-ordained glitter princess’s unflinching take on Indigenous life, with “revolution nestled beneath every sentence, every word” (Globe & Mail). Whitehead is pursuing a doctorate in Indigenous literatures and cultures at the University of Calgary, on Treaty 7 Territory.
