Research: Some Methods to Enrich our Imaginations, with Margaret Sweatman

Sunday, October 23, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm Archived

Online, Zoom,

In this 90-minute Zoom-encounter, we’ll explore aspects of research for creative work. With technology, we have access to infinite information: images, YouTube video clips, texts on-line. And we can venture out, travel, talk to strangers, take notes and photographs, experience vivid aspects of our fictional imaginings. How, then, do we turn information into rhythm, character, dramatic event? How can we inhabit our research, graft it to our characters and our narratives, embed it so it’ll nourish our creations?

While we won’t have time in this meeting to include writing exercises, participants are invited to conjure a creative project that includes material that you don’t know much (or anything) about or that scares you a little, subjects that seem too big and complex to take on. With your own project in mind, our survey of research methods might spark ideas and strategies, to give you fresh energy when you return to your solitary work.

I hope that we’ll have a full discussion, that you’ll feel free to make your own observations, and ask any question that comes to mind.

Tickets for this workshop are under a “Pay What You Can” model – with the recommended price of $30.
