Unsettling our Stories

Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm Archived

Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP), The Forks

Decolonizing, the patient and disciplined excavating of ideas and ideals that advantage some and disadvantage others, is a massive undertaking. This afternoon, three writers share their approaches to unsettling our stories: an Angolan living in Brazil explores the lost culture of his home city; an American-Canadian living in Boston flips the script on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, exposing an ugly tangle of whiteness, exceptionalism, and humanitarianism; and a Cree poet from northern Alberta bears witness to the violence at the heart of Indigenous experience in a country of settlers.
