Members of the spoken word community, slam poets combine a range of different styles, traditions, and approaches to language in exhilarating three-minute performances. A poetry slam specifies no props, no musical instruments, and no nudity, but anything else goes. Poems are judged on both writing and performance by designated audience members.
After a competitive season, Dylan Mowatt, Larysa Musick, Derrick Nachtigall, Tiana Northage, and Abdul Smith came out on top, so they’ll be representing our city at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Winnipeg later this fall. Tonight, they’ll present their provocative, political, personal stuff on our stage.
To cap off the evening: The Haiku Death Match! A contest of wit and wisdom parcelled out in 17-syllable units. Comical, thoughtful, profane—or all three? The audience votes for their favorites over several rapid-fire rounds to declare this year’s Haiku Master! Not for the faint of heart…
Advance tickets are no longer available since our office will be closed during the festival. Tickets can still be purchased at the door of the event.
