Every September since 1997, the Winnipeg International Writers Festival presents THIN AIR, a week-long celebration of books and ideas. We connect 50+ writers with over 6000 people of all ages and tastes, with events in English and French, on stages and in classrooms, in museums and parks and pubs. We expand imaginations, build community, and inspire change. We’re proof that learning—life-long learning—is not just essential to our growth and depth as a community, a nation, a culture, but it’s also satisfying and fun!

Winnipeg is a mix of peoples on Treaty 1 Territory—everyone from people whose roots go back thousands of years to new Canadians who are making Winnipeg their home. Our festival respects and reflects that diversity with an eclectic group of writers presenting in French and English (and sometimes other languages!) and we share work with audiences of all ages. Most of our events take place in Winnipeg, but we also reach out to communities around the province as well. In the off-season, we partner with other local organizations–including our festival partner McNally Robinson Booksellers– in year-round events, honouring the power of stories in our lives.
